Typical Session

A typical senior session runs one hour and may be structured like this:

  • Opening song
    Signals the beginning of the session and encourages the client to sing along with lyric sheets provided
  • Sing along songs
    A series of two to three client preferred songs to keep the client singing using lyric sheets and helping them to relax and breathe.  This activity emphasizes vocalizing, enunciation, breathing, social interaction, and memory retention
  • Percussion improvisation
    A rhythmic musical activity using small hand held instruments that addresses musical timing, fine and gross motor coordination, creativity, improvisation, listening, and social interaction
  • Sing along songs
    A series of two to three client preferred songs to keep the client singing using lyric sheets and helping them to relax and breathe.  This activity emphasizes vocalizing, enunciation, breathing, social interaction, and memory retention
  • Musical improvisation with Suzuki QChord
    A series of three to four clients preferred songs played along to by the client on the Suzuki QChord.  The client is encouraged to sing along with the music therapist as they play.  In this activity, the client is the musician.  The activity promotes creativity and improvisation (cognitive skills), fine motor coordination, hand to eye coordination, and building self-esteem and self-confidence as the clients exercise and re-discover their creative selves
  • Closing song
    Signals the end of the session

The typical senior session is the framework and other activities may be substituted depending on the ability (or challenge) of the client, their level of mobility, whether the client prefers an active or passive music therapy session.  Other activities may include:

  • Dance and movement
  • Sing along song with hand motions
  • Name That Tune or Artist
  • Chair dancing to pre-recorded music
  • Djembe drumming
  • Keyboard playing
  • Guitar strumming with Tx chording
  • Listening to client preferred music
  • Boomwhacker tube percussion

An opening and closing song is standard in every senior session.  The song titles will change depending on the client’s preferences and times of the year.  The one hour senior session can be tailored to an individual or group format.
